The internet is the social medium of our time. Millions of people surf the web every day to acquire everything from news and entertainment, to products and even the occasional love interest. Corporations have realised the value of these wandering eyeballs and are cashing in on new media in a big way. Internet advertising is a rapidly growing industry generating billions and billions of dollars.
Fundamentally however the internet is not a TV station or a newspaper. It's an organic creation of millions of ordinary people. Wikipedia, blogs, MySpace and YouTube are all explosions of content which live through the creativity and connections between us.
ripple exists to harness the power of the internet advertising in the true spirit of the internet - providing a tool for people to help others. We are leveraging the market for internet advertising to generate revenue to help people rather than our pockets.
And there are plenty of people to help...
These statistics are numbing, but there is a silver lining. These terrible problems can be solved. Did you know that the World Bank estimates that extending universal primary school education to every child in the world would cost only $10-15 billion dollars a year? Giving every person in the world access to basic water and sanitation would cost only $30 Billion. In 2006 ~15 Billion dollars was spent on internet advertising. If ripple had as many users as MySpace, we could raise up to $2 billion a year. Now we aren't that ambitious, but we can start making a difference.
Thirty thousand children die each day due to poverty, that's one every three seconds. Can you live with that? Be part of our team and help ripple become a force for change.
